for families that appreciate the black experience

About Us

Our Mission Statement

To enhance the strength of black parents by giving them a culturally-satiated forum in which to share all that comes with parenthood; voice opinions to benefit others; and gain advice and support to raise strong families.

Why We are Here

Black Parent magazine's main purpose is to fill a void that has existed in the parents' publication market for a long time.

Founder Mathilda Jones noticed this void when she became a parent for the first time in January 2005. Browsing through general market parenting publications did not lead to answers to the questions she had about raising black children in a way that enhances their culture and self-pride.

Through research and through life experiences, Jones has learned that while all parents just want the best for their children, some differences exist between the races in how to approach parenting due to societal conventions that stem out of this country's past. It is those differences that Black Parent magazine addresses through feature stories and the varied forums within the magazine.
